Saving our planet

Companies that manage and organise real latex balloon races argue that their balloons are environmentally friendly. They say, for example, “The acceptable way to run a balloon race is to only release items that are biodegradable. All of our balloon race kits contain these items. Our balloons are made from latex which is a natural product which will break down at the same rate as an oak leaf".

Unfortunately, oak leaves can take years to fully degrade, so the balloon company’s sales literature is extremely misleading if not downright untrue. But that’s not the whole picture. No, the real issue is that birds, animals and sea creatures like turtles try to eat them when they inevitably fall back to earth as a result of helium escaping through the latex.

So when a bird pecks at a shiny red, say, deflating balloon, the rubber envelops the bird’s beak and asphyxiates it. And similarly, let’s not forget indiscriminate litter caused by these balloon releases. It might be brightly coloured but it doesn’t belong on the sea shore or school playground.

Recently, Rentaballoonrace has made great strides promoting the company’s ethical credentials. We’re building relationships and offering help to a myriad of environmental organisations and pressure groups worldwide because a strong group can achieve a lot together.
